A Year of Sailing: How The Moorings Points System Works
Yacht ownership is an exciting way to embrace the finer things in life and enjoy some of the most incredible sailing locations in the world.
If you’re new to charter ownership or considering joining The Moorings Yacht Ownership Program, we’d like to take you for a cruise through our points system and help you imagine what a year of sailing might look like.
Our Points System Explained
We’ve created an easy-to-use points system that offers up to 12 weeks of sailing each year, providing you with ample time on the water—far surpassing what many other charter ownership programs in the industry offer.
Essentially, every owner has 84 points to use each year. Charters cost two points per day during the high season and one point per day in the low season. Half of your points can be used for advance bookings and the other half for short-notice bookings. Some owners like to stretch their points by using them all in the low-season, while others prefer to book blocks of sailing time and leave some points left over for short-notice trips. How you do it is entirely up to you!
Additionally, you can book charters in locations other than your home base using a sister ship identical to yours. Owners have access to bases in over 20 worldwide locations, including Tahiti, Thailand, several Caribbean bases, two in the Bahamas, Mexico, Belize, Greece, Croatia, and more. Each Moorings base is guaranteed to greet you with a warm welcome and offer the same level of service as your home base.
The points required do not change based on location when booking identical sister ships, leaving you free to explore the world as you please.
For example, say your home base is Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, but you want to visit Greece, Tahiti, or both! All you have to do is decide when you want to sail, make the reservation with our dedicated owner-care team, and get yourself there.
An Example Year of Sailing
So, let’s plan a year of sailing using your points, assuming your yacht’s home base is Tortola:
January: One week advanced notice use of own boat
(high season,14 points)
Chances are if your home base is located in Tortola, you’ve been here before and know the famous hot spots around the islands: snorkeling the Indians, walking through The Baths, enjoying a meal at either Saba Rock or Bitter End Yacht Club, swimming up to Soggy Dollar for a famous painkiller, and no trip is complete without a visit to the famous Willy T.
May: Two weeks of advanced notice use of a sister ship
(low season, 14 points)
Belize is a unique Caribbean destination in that it is rarely plagued by hurricanes or other extreme weather. Enjoy diving, deep-sea fishing, exploring caves, and the southern reefs, or check out some Mayan ruins on the mainland.
July: One week of advanced notice use of a sister ship
(high season,14 points)
Picturesque ports, beaches, fresh seafood, resorts, and incredible medieval architecture line the Dalmatian coast. Spend your days cruising through the islands, inlets, and coral reefs then immerse yourself in the unique culture and history of a different town each evening.
September: Two weeks short notice use of a sister ship
(low season, 14 points)
Pristine beaches, crystal clear water, and vibrant coral reefs make the Bahamas the perfect place to dive or snorkel. Cruise among the chain of islands and enjoy tranquility on the sea and beachy nightlife when you want it.
November: Two weeks of short notice use of a sister ship
(low season, 14 points)
Back at your home base, but this time why not go off the beaten path, explore secluded coves and beaches away from tourists, spend a few days in Anegada catching fresh lobster, enjoy the lesser-known diving and snorkeling spots, and branch out and find a few new restaurants than the usual “go-to’s”, or perhaps spend a few days of R&R at Oil Nut Bay!
Using the example above, we’ve used 70 out of 84 points and experienced four incredible locations with room to spare.
You’ll find that there are no black out dates and while there is a limit of 28 points (or two weeks) for advance bookings in the high season, there are no points restrictions for low-season bookings.
With all that in mind, how would you spend your 84 points? The possibilities are endless!
