Grenada

Grenada

Grenada is the southernmost Moorings charter base in the Caribbean. Known as the spice island, Grenada is a delightful sailing destination with plenty of clear water, gorgeous white and black sand beaches, and reliable trade winds. The island is full of natural beauty, with waterfalls, mountains, parks, and rainforests. Where else but on the spice island will you find a cinnamon tree by the side of the road, pick leaves from a bay laurel tree, or find fresh nutmeg to flavour your meals?

The Moorings charter base offers you full provisioning service, restaurants, bars and duty-free shopping within the marina plus 24-hour security, first-class washrooms and laundry and a swimming pool.

The southern coast is attractive year-round. Full-service marinas and chandleries, restaurants, beaches and great snorkelling are all within easy reach of Prickly Bay and Mount Hartmann Bay. In addition to Grenada’s natural attractions, you’ll find interesting places to explore, including historic forts, a chocolate plantation, and coastal towns with restaurants, markets and rum distilleries.

Sailing north from Grenada, your first stop is the island of Carriacou. Keep cruising to Union Island and clear into St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Then you’re on your way to the Tobago Cays, a crown jewel of the eastern Caribbean. Its coral reefs are breathtaking, and the islets and beaches are the highlight of any holiday. Carry on to Mayreau, Mustique, Bequia and many other islands — you can even reach St. Lucia. You’ll never run out of places to visit.

For the more adventurous, Trinidad and Tobago is just an overnight sail south for an entirely different Caribbean experience. Trinidad offers a mélange of cultures, foods and celebrations. The island is also famous for its wildlife and bird watching.

The Moorings charter base in Grenada is located at the modern Port Louis Marina in the capital city of St. George. The base is less than fifteen minutes from Maurice Bishop International Airport and is convenient to the downtown market, as well as several hotels, restaurants, and beaches. If you’re up for a colourful Caribbean spectacle and party, there’s hardly a better place to stay than Port Louis for the annual Spicemas Carnival in August.

Grenada is a haven for cruising sailors, strategically positioned at the edge of the high hurricane-risk areas. Many full-time sailors choose Grenada and nearby Trinidad as their safe havens, steering clear of storms. With the summer months dedicated to sailing, you’ll have ample time to explore the Caribbean’s beauty, knowing that your boat is safely outside most hurricane risks.
