St. Martin

St. Martin

When people think of the Caribbean, they often visualize St. Martin. It’s a popular destination with so much to see and do. The French and Dutch have shared St. Martin peacefully since the 17th century, creating a distinct local culture that offers a broad range of dining and entertainment options. The island’s natural beauty, sparkling waters, white sand beaches, and range of sailing experiences make it an ideal place to start a cruising vacation.

The Moorings Charter base is located in the sheltered Fort Louis Marina in the French city of Marigot. The marina hosts restaurants and boutiques, and it’s an easy walk to fine dining, French bakeries, shopping, hotels and the Marigot market. Though Princess Juliana Airport is on the Dutch side, it’s less than fifteen minutes from the marina. Flights from the U.S. and Canada are plentiful. Amsterdam and Paris have the most connections to St. Martin from Europe.

St. Martin has many lovely bays and anchorages, and you can easily spend a week just exploring the island. Visit Grand Case, where you’ll find some of the best dining on the French side, and Orient Bay, with its sparkling white beach and lively nightlife. For a flavor of the Dutch half, make a stop in Great Bay and visit the capital of Phillipsburg.

Anguilla is an easy sail north. It’s a low-lying island with quiet beaches and a slower pace of life. You’ll still find lovely restaurants, beach bars, and loads of natural beauty, but away from the bustle.

For more ambitious sailing, set out south for St. Barts, another French island known for super yachts and high-end resorts. The restaurants and shopping in St. Barts are first-rate, and Gustavia Harbor is safe and comfortable. All around St. Barts, you’ll find inviting waters, beautiful beaches, and delightful places to go ashore.

You can also sail to Sint Eustatius (or “Statia”), St. Kitts and Nevis and Antiqua. Hike a volcano in Statia or visit the markets and beaches. See historic forts and national parks on St. Kitts, and enjoy more beaches and snorkelling. Keep an eye out for the local monkeys as you walk around. Antigua is a major yachting centre with hundreds of beaches. Visit English Harbour and historic Nelson’s Dockyard, and take in the famous sunset barbecue on Shirley Heights.

The only limit is how much sailing adventure you want!
